Domain Names

by Pete

What is a domain name? A domain name (aka a url) is both your name and address on the internet. It is the equivalent of reserving the right to have a company name in the business world when a company is being incorporated. If you are building a company website, I’d recommend getting your own domain name before you decide on a business name, and then after that trying to incorporate your business with a name that matches your domain name. The reasoning behind this is one of the essential ways people find information about companies nowadays is by googling them and looking them up on the web. If your domain name doesn’t match your company’s name very smoothly then you’re kind of hooped.

Get a domain that makes sense and is line with what you are trying to market on the internet, if you already have an established business then do your best to mimic that in your domain name, but there’s a chance it will be taken, so if .com is taken, try .ca if you live in Canada, or .co.uk if you live in the uk, this strategy is especially effective if you plan on catering to the local community (they recognize your localness just with the web address) and on top of this, your customer has more faith in you that you’re not a scam artist from some foreign and mysterious land. Another popular strategy to domain names is to buy several domain names such as .com .ca .co.uk etc. If you are starting up an international business venture this is an inexpensive and effective way to try and target out several of your company’s markets. Also if your first thought for a url is taken, be creative, yet stick to a relevant title. There is no one right answer to your domain names, but just remember, there are many wrong answers.

Avoid strange characters and meaningless words in your domain name, it leads to confusion from users and mistyped web addresses. I’m talking hyphens, other symbols and “clever” misspelled words within the title. This is especially important when you consider that many of your potential customers on the web are not very computer literate and are easily frustrated when on the web.

Be sure you want that exact domain name before you buy it, many domain providers will charge you a second time if you mess up and mistype it. So don’t make any typos.
